Biography

Dr. Marinella P.J. Offerman is psychologist and obtained her PhD in 2013 for research into quality of life and good care for head and neck cancer (HNC) patients and their loved ones. The Value Based Health Care (VBHC)-research line of the department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery has a mission to transform HNC care into more customized and future-proof care by creating an ongoing circle between research and care that continuously drives innovation, increasing the value of care in and outside the consultation room.

Her personal vision is to both improve the quality of care throughout the entire patient journey and strengthen individual patient empowerment. Focus areas are value based, psychosocial and palliative care for HNC patients and optimal doctor-patient communication. Key is the use of outcome information in clinical practice, like patient reported outcome data (PRO) and medical outcome data in prognostic models. With a large team of PhD-candidates, Marinella runs different research projects, of which current examples are the clinical lead palliative remote care in the Convergence with Erasmus MC, TU Delft and Erasmus University and KWF-projects on prognostic counseling and optimizing the link between formal and informal care.

Her team is an international frontrunner in VBHC acquiring scientific knowledge on the development of new outcome-based healthcare concepts and their added value, such as the ePRO structure Healthcare Monitor and the current shift from traditional hospital palliative care to a hybrid ePRO-guided care model. For this data and technological solutions will facilitate compassionate remote palliative care.

Her research work is characterized by co-creation, using the bottom-up expertise of professionals and the experience of patients as key elements to develop and implement successful healthcare innovations shaping our current & future care.
